James Thomas
His alarm shrieked and James rolled over, turning it off. Mak moaned and pulled the duvet over her head. James pulled it back down.
âI assume youâre going to work today, right?â
âYes, I canât pull another sick day,â she said without opening her eyes.
âWell then,â James said, throwing the blankets to the end of his bed, âyou better get up, because I set the alarm for as late as possible, and we donât have a lot of time.â
Mak tucked her legs up to her chest. âYouâre annoying me,â she said.
âI think you mean irritating,â James said with a grin.
Mak chuckled. âI am actually sorry about that comment. I shouldnât have said that.â
James kissed her. âDonât be. Everyone in my team thought it was hilarious. Even I laughed.â Samuel had found it particularly hilarious and had stored that surveillance clip from the night theyâd moved her into Thomas Security.
Mak tried to pull him on top of her, but James knew that was a bad idea, because heâd spend the next hour there. And he didnât have time, because in addition to getting in the shower, he had to go next door and speak to Deaconâand that was going to be an unpleasant conversation.
He got out of bed before his willpower diminished. James dressed himself in pajamas and pulled out a pair for Mak to wear. They would drown her small frame, but it was preferable over taking her downstairs in a towel. âUp,â James said as he tossed the pajamas in her direction and realized how much he sounded like one of his old military commanders.
Mak sighed as she sat up, but a moment later she was dressed. She rolled the pants up so she didnât trip, and she was ready. James led her out of his apartment and back into hers. He kissed her goodbye at the door and then made his way back upstairs.
He knocked on Deaconâs door but let himself in, as they all did at each otherâs apartments. Deacon was in the kitchen cooking, and based on the smell James knew it was eggs.
Deacon looked at him. âShould I make double?â
âPlease,â James said, looking at his watch. If they were going to talk, they might as well eat at the same time because otherwise he wasnât going to have time to do both.
James helped himself to a glass of juice, noticing his brother already had one.
âSo, we need to talk,â James said, and Deacon immediately looked annoyed. âI want to be honest with you, because Iâm not going to, nor will I, hide anything from you. I know you wonât like this, but Iâm asking you to support me anyway.â
Deacon pursed his lips and nodded his head, motioning for James to continue.
âMak stayed with me last night,â James said and Deacon squeezed his eyes shut. âIâm not going into this relationship lightly, Deacon. I gave Mak a stringent list of security measures she would have to agree with if we were going to have any form of a relationship, and sheâs agreed to themâat least for now,â James said.
